Capsules a yr. saved from landfill

Australians dispose of around three million coffee capsules every day. To give this number some context, that’s approximately an Olympic-sized swimming pools filled to the brim with capsules that may end up as landfill every 8 days. They also generate tonnes of carbon dioxide through production and distribution, and can take 500 years to finally break down. One company making your home brewed coffee both delicious and eco-friendly is Crema Joe, a small company based in Mitcham, Victoria. Their range of environmentally friendly capsules are designed to be reused, so you’re free to brew your choice of freshly ground coffee beans using your coffee pod machine. With the support of Dreamstarter, they were able top turn a caffeinated dream into a reality.

"Dreamstarter brought a lot of awareness to our solution for the single-use capsule problem. It has really been a massive stepping-stone for us – and it’s been a really big feather in our cap to have the support of such a well-known organisation.

In October 2016, Crema Joe successfully completed their crowdfunding with ING Dreamstarter, and began their journey to improve their sustainable habits, by creating eco-friendly and sustainable packaging to house their reusable products. A few exciting business updates to look forward in 2017 include the launch of two new lines of eco-friendly coffee capsules, and launch of the new sustainable packaging.
  • If we assumed the average household with a coffee machine drinks around 2 cups of coffee a day – we can estimate that from the 3000 SealPod packs we sold to our retail customers we have potentially diverted nearly 6000 capsules from heading to landfill a day – that’s 2,190,000 in a year!
