Two-thirds of the world’s illiterate adults are women, and over 60 million girls across the globe are not in school costing some countries more than $1 billion every year in lost earning capacity. These damning facts are just some of many when assessing the impact of inequality between male and female education and empowerment. One Brisbane company striving to right this wrong is Words With Heart, an eco-friendly stationery and print social enterprise that funds women’s and girls’ education projects. All their products are sustainably produced with 100% recycled paper stocks, vegetable inks and green electricity, and every item sold funds a specific number of education days for women and girls. With the support of Dreamstarter, they were able to turn a dream of gender equality into a reality.
In 2015, Words with Heart successfully completed their crowdfunding campaign with ING Dreamstarter, raising over $18,500. Following their crowdfunding, they presold 25,000 books of stationary, beginning to answer the question of whether their business will really work, and will people see the value of it. ING continued their support in 2016 with a Grant for Growth used to improve Words with Heart’s digital payment capabilities.
